Robert F. Kennedy was assassinated in Los Angeles, shortly after winning the California Democratic primary. He was shot by Sirhan Sirhan, a young Palestinian motivated by Kennedy’s support for Israel, at the Ambassador Hotel during a victory speech. Kennedy died 26 hours later, deeply affecting the nation and marking another tragic event in American political history, close on the heels of his brother's assassination five years earlier.
